Iristick launches the Iristick.G3 smart safety glasses

The Iristick.G3 smart safety glasses run on your own phone over USB-C. No battery pack to charge, two 16 MP cameras, and 95 grams on your head.

The Iristick.G3 is available from today for technicians, growers and inspectors who need both hands on the job. The new smart safety glasses, designed and produced in Europe, weigh 95 grams, plug into your own iPhone or Android phone with one USB-C cable, and put two 16 MP cameras and a barcode scanner at eye level.

Why does the Iristick.G3 run without a battery pack?

The Iristick.G3 takes its power from the phone, so there is no battery pack to look after. On the Iristick.G2 and Iristick.H1, a pocket unit with its own battery sits between the glasses and the phone. That is one more device to charge every night, swap halfway through a shift and clip to a belt. With the G3, one USB-C cable runs from the glasses to the phone, and putting the glasses on takes as long as plugging in that cable.

The phone also handles the connection, the apps and the updates, while the glasses keep their own image processing. That is how the G3 stays at 95 grams with no heat at the temples, and why upgrading your phone upgrades your smart glasses too. For your IT team, the G3 behaves like an accessory: the MDM manages the phone, and the glasses have no operating system to enroll. We explained the thinking behind this design in why phone-tethered smart glasses are future-proof.

"We got rid of the pocket unit entirely. You just attach your phone to the glasses, start the app, and you're ready to go."

"With the G3, we wanted to make things simpler," says Kirby De Jode, CEO at Iristick. "But simplicity was only part of it: the G3 also comes with an upgraded display, and we kept pushing on comfort, making the device even better to wear throughout a full workday. We took the feedback we received on the G2 seriously, and used it to build what we believe is the best device we've made so far."

What do two cameras and a barcode scanner change on the job?

The two cameras split the work the way the job does. The 16 MP wide camera covers 115 degrees horizontally, so a remote expert on an Iristick.Assist call sees the whole cabinet, machine or greenhouse row. The 16 MP tele camera covers 44 degrees, close enough to read a meter, a serial plate or the state of a single leaf. Both stream in Full HD 1080p.

The integrated barcode scanner reads 1D and 2D codes, including QR, EAN-13 and Aztec. In Iristick.Collector, a scan fills in the asset or sample ID, and the wearer speaks the rest of the record without putting down their tools.

One thing works differently from the G2, which had a 6x optical zoom lens. The G3 replaces it with the dedicated tele camera and digital zoom.

What changes if you already use the Iristick.G2 or H1?

The biggest change is the job you stop doing, which is charging and swapping pocket units. Beyond that, these are the differences you will notice:

  • The single USB-C connector works with Android and iOS phones alike, so you no longer order a separate version for each.

  • The OLED display (640 x 400, up to 2000 nits) is bigger, sharper and brighter than the LCD on the Iristick.G2.

  • The G3 is certified as safety eyewear to EN 16321 and ANSI Z87, and rated IP54 against dust and splashes.

  • The frame comes in two sizes, and a magnetic insert holds your own prescription lenses. Each wearer keeps their own insert, so a team can share one pair of glasses.

  • Iristick.Assist, Iristick.Teams and Iristick.Collector run on the G3 as they do on your current glasses.

The G3 hardware works with Android 8 or later and iOS 15 or later. Some apps ask for a newer version, so check the full specifications and phone compatibility before you order. The Iristick.G2 is sold while stock lasts, and the Iristick.H1 is sold out.

What should you plan for?

Because the G3 runs on the phone's battery, the phone now sets the length of your working day. On a Pixel 4a 5G, a phone from 2020, an Iristick.Assist call runs for 3 to 4 hours. For a full shift, you can add the Iristick wireless power bank. The phone is something your team already charges every day, which is a lot easier to manage than a second device.

Where can you get the Iristick.G3?

The Iristick.G3 is available now from the Iristick shop, and current prices are on the pricing page. If you want to test it on your own work first, the six-week trial program puts the glasses and the software on the job, and the trial fee is deducted if you buy.
